STRAY DOGS IN ST PETERSBURG
This is a consequence of the severe deprivation felt by many people in Russia now. Korobochniki are homeless people [the name comes from cardboard box. However, it has a further meaning in St Petersburg [and probably other cities] due to an ingenious but cruel hoax in which boxes plat a part. They paint on the boxes an appeal for money for food for stray dogs and cats, some of which are with them. But the money is not used for them. The animals are starved, sold if possible and otherwise allowed to die.

There is a whole web site about it with pictures -- http://www.priut.ru/ru/node/1956 -- but it is in Russian. Here is another with an article about the same facts in English. http://www.times.spb.ru/index.php?action_id=2&story_id=16959
Some concerned individuals have got together to try to help at least some of the strays and ill-treated dogs. Here are some pictures.

A meeting in St Peterdburg street to call for help.
The Subotnik A subotnik [from the Russian for Saturday] is an area of parkland in suburban Petersburg, so called because in Leningrad's darkest days people gave up their Saturdays to make some leisure space as part of rebuilding their city. This now is a rescue centre for homeless dogs situated on that parkland.
He or she is now rescued and awaits a kind new owner.
One resident is given a sen off to a, hopefully, better life.
